Poplar vs Eucalyptus Plywood for Campervan Furniture: Which Should You Actually Use?

If you're converting a van, you've probably heard the hype about "lightweight" plywood. Poplar gets mentioned a lot as the go-to for saving weight. But is it really worth it compared to denser options like eucalyptus?

As someone who designs and builds flat-pack campervan furniture every week, here's my honest take.

Weight Difference

For a standard 15mm sheet (1220 x 2440mm):

  • Poplar plywood: ~22–25 kg
  • Eucalyptus plywood: ~29 kg

Difference per sheet: About 4–7 kg. On a typical mid-sized kitchen pod or bed section, you're looking at 3–7 kg total saving with poplar. That's not nothing — but it's roughly the weight of a couple of bags of sugar.

Strength Comparison

This is where it gets interesting:

Screw Retention & Vibration — Why It Matters in Vans

One of the biggest issues in campervans is vibration. Roads (especially UK ones) shake everything constantly. Poplar's lower density means it doesn't grip screws as well — over time, joints can work loose, leading to rattles or wobbly furniture.

Eucalyptus holds screws significantly better (roughly 1.3–1.6x stronger withdrawal resistance). This makes a real difference in flat-pack designs where components are repeatedly assembled, transported, and used on the move. Stronger joints = quieter, more solid van that needs less maintenance.

We use beech-faced eucalyptus ply for our pods and beds. It gives a clean, hard-wearing surface with excellent structural performance and screw retention underneath.

Real-World Campervan Use

In a van, your furniture takes constant vibration, occasional overloading, and damp conditions. The extra few kilos of eucalyptus is usually a fair trade for furniture that doesn't flex, creak, or need constant tightening.

I've seen lightweight poplar builds that look great on paper but end up with more movement and wear after a couple of years. Our setups are built to handle proper use without drama.

Our Recommendation

For structural parts (beds, kitchen pods, wardrobes, load-bearing shelves) — go with eucalyptus or similar hardwood plywood. For non-structural bits (light dividers, very low-load panels, or where every gram really matters) — poplar can make sense.
